What to Do After Receiving Your Succulents: A Guide to Planting and Caring for Your New Plants

After receiving your succulent plants, it's important to give them the proper care to help them thrive in their new home. Here are some tips for planting and caring for your succulents:

  • Place the plant on top of dry soil with good drainage, and let it sit in a climate-controlled environment with indirect sunlight or shade and some air flow. Wait 3-7 days before planting the succulent into the soil. This will help the plant recover from the transition and get used to its new home.

  • For the first 2 weeks after planting, water the plant at the edge of the planter daily or every 2-3 days, depending on the humidity of your environment. Avoid getting the leaves wet. After new root growth has started, it is important to keep the soil moist but not wet.

  • Gradually introduce some sunlight to your succulent after 1 week. When the plant has established a good amount of new roots (you should be able to gently push on the plant and feel a strong force), you can move it to direct sunlight if the temperature is under 85F/30C.

  • Water the plant thoroughly at night and let it dry completely. During the hot season, after the roots have become well-established, cut back on watering to prevent root rot. If the roots are not yet established, keep the plant in shade until they are healthy and strong.

  • Do not water the plant on rainy days, as this can increase the risk of root rot.

*It's normal for the plant to lose some color or leaves and to open up a bit as it pushes out new roots and gets used to its new home. The color and new leaves will return once the roots are well-established. You can tell that the roots are strong when you can lift up the planter by holding only the plant.
